Importance Of Duct Cleaning

Why would I need to have my ducts cleaned?

How dirty could they really be?

How often should they be done?

These are good questions that you may have asked yourself before. Let us be the ones to answer them.

There are many reasons to have your ducts cleaned:

  • They are likely full of dust.
  • If you have pets, your ducts will have pet hair and dander in addition to the regular household dust.
  • If you have purchased a new house or you rent a house, the previous resident’s dust and animal dander is in your ducts.
  • If you have had any renovations done, there will be excess dust from that work.
  • And, if you have allergies, having your ducts cleaned could help with symptoms.

The average 6 room house will produce 40 pounds of dust a year. 40 pounds! That is about 4 large bags of flour worth of dust. If it seems like your house is always dusty, or you dust and a day later there seems to be another layer of dust on everything, it is because the dust is coming from your forced air heating system. It accumulates in your ducts and blows into your home and into the air you breath.

Now consider if you have had your ducts cleaned since you moved into the house, whether you purchased a new home or are renting, the likelihood of the last resident or landlord having had the ducts cleaned when they moved out is slim to none. I wouldn’t want to be breathing someone else’s dust, skin cells, pet hair and dander. And having your ducts cleaned can seriously benefit any allergy symptoms you may have.

Another contributor to excess dust is construction and renovation.  If you have done renovations in your house then there is going to be even more dust from the renovation activity. And if you live in an are where there has been construction (new house builds, etc.), there is potential for excess dust and dirt to have made it into your home and your ducting system.

So, now that you know how dirty the inside of your ducts and the air in your home are you may be itching to book an appointment to have them cleaned. Then what? How often should they be done? If you are 1 – changing your furnace filter regularly and 2 – you haven’t done any renovation projects, once every two years should be good. If you undertake a reno project, you should have your ducts cleaned upon completion of the project.

While duct cleaning is not a service we offer we still want to emphasize its importance to your home and your health.

While we are on the subject of duct cleaning, what about dryer vents? This is an inexpensive service that we do offer. Dryer lint is extremely flammable, so much so that our family uses it as a fire starter when we go camping. It is a good idea to have your dryer vent cleaned of lint and debris. This will also help your dryer run more efficiently and reduce the time it take for your laundry to dry – therefore saving energy and money.
