It might be time to reintroduce ourselves and our company, High Tide Plumbing & Gas Ltd. Since we started in 2020, we have continued to grow, and we want our current and future customers to know who we are.

Jordan is a Journeyman red seal plumber and gasfitter. He completed his apprenticeship in 2013 and has over 15 years of industry experience.
In April 2018, Jordan and I moved our family (us and two boys) to Nanaimo from Airdrie, AB.
People often ask us ‘why?’ and we answer ‘why not?’ We already knew we liked it here since it was one of our regular vacation destinations. Plus, I would trade prairie snow and chinooks for ocean views and rain any day of the week.
Jordan started working for a local mechanical company, and we were so happy to be settling into Island life.
Two years after moving here, Jordan got laid off from his job. What felt like bad news at the time turned out to be a blessing in disguise as, almost by accident, High Tide Plumbing & Gas Ltd. was born.
We didn’t intend to start our own business, but opportunity knocked, and we answered.
In 2021, we experienced our first significant growth milestone when we hired Tamme as our first employee. She is a Journeyman gasfitter and an asset to the High Tide team. We constantly lean on her for her knowledge of local codes and regulations.
Then, in August 2021, we did it again, and we hired Matt as an apprentice to work with Jordan and Tamme and make the workload manageable. We are happy to invest the time into helping Matt earn his Plumbing ticket. He has already established himself as a valuable member of our team.
Since then, we have focussed on growing the business and establishing ourselves in the Nanaimo community and Greater Vancouver Island. We have weathered the COVID-19 pandemic, had a child in the hospital (he’s doing excellent now) and added another boy to our family.
In July 2023, Monty joined our team as a salesperson, mainly for fireplaces, but with many years in the industry, he is branching into other sales areas as well.
Here are a few examples of things that set us apart in the trades industry.
1) We put great value on people. Both people we work for and people who work for us. We pride ourselves on giving an excellent customer experience. Mistakes happen, and that’s okay; taking responsibility and making the necessary corrections is essential. We also aim to make our company a great workplace by treating our employees well and offering growth opportunities. After all, what would we be without our people and our customers?
2) We aim for no one to fear “Hurricane Jordan” (tradespeople know what I’m talking about). We choose to be different in an industry fraught with harsh, loud words and often disrespect on work sites. Everyone deserves respect, and communication is more effective when approached with intent and care.
3) We operate with an “everybody sweeps” motto, meaning we don’t say, “It’s not my job.” If the floor needs sweeping, grab a broom, and you are just as likely to see the journeyman sweeping as you are to see the apprentice sweeping.
This is both literal and a metaphor, of course, but the idea is that we help each other out.
4) Travel. We have learned that only some plumbing and gas companies are willing to travel over Vancouver Island or to the smaller Gulf Islands, and we are happy to be one of them. While it is more work and effort, we like visiting new places and seeing our beautiful coast from many different places.
