Spring is here, and we couldn’t be more excited! As the days get longer and the flowers bloom, the High Tide Team is ready to enjoy everything Nanaimo has to offer—rain or shine. Here are some of our favorite local activities to make the most of the season

Get Outside and Explore
Nanaimo is known for its stunning outdoor spaces; we take full advantage of them year-round. Whether it’s a hike through the forest or a stroll by the ocean, here are some of our top spots:
-Pipers Lagoon & Neck Point Park – These two gems offer a perfect mix of ocean views, rugged cliffs, and forested paths. Pipers Lagoon is an adventure in itself, with winding trails and breathtaking vistas. At Neck Point Park, families with young kids will love searching for fairy houses hidden among the trees. Bonus: If you choose the right path, it’s even stroller-friendly!
-Jack Point & Biggs Park – This 5 km out-and-back trail near Duke Point Ferry Terminal is an excellent option for a peaceful nature walk. If you go at low tide, you’ll see some fascinating rock formations shaped by the waves over time.
-Cable Bay – Our absolute go-to! This 6.5 km out-and-back trail is great for all ages, with hidden dinosaur figurines and carved wooden owls adding a fun touch for the kids. Once you reach the narrows, watch for boats, eagles, and sea lions; if you are lucky, you might see whales!

Stroll the Waterfront
Nothing beats a scenic walk along Nanaimo’s waterfront. We love parking downtown, taking a leisurely stroll by the marina, watching seaplanes take off and land, and reading the names of the boats moored there. Walking out on The Swy-a-Lana Pier and playing at Maffeo Sutton Park make for a great stop along the way. And if the sun is shining, we might even treat ourselves to an ice cream cone!

Hit the Bike Trails
Spring means it’s time to dust off the bikes, pump up the tires, and hit the trails! For kids (and kids at heart), Stevie Smith Bike Park is a fantastic spot. There are areas suited for all skill levels, and the mountain bike track is always a hit. We also like to spend some time watching the “big kids” take on the downhill trails—so impressive!
Play a Round of Golf (Big or Mini!)
Whether we’re bringing the kids or sneaking away for a round on our own (shh, don’t tell them!), golf is always a great springtime activity.
For mini golf, Rip Tide Lagoon in Parksville is our favourite. With two intertwined courses, it never feels too crowded, and the lush setting with water features makes for a fun and relaxing outing.
Beban Park Pitch & Putt is the perfect next step if the kids are ready to graduate to real golf. It’s small enough to be manageable but still offers the feel of an actual golf course at a great price.

Enjoy a Drink on the Patio
As the temperatures rise, patio season kicks off, and there’s nothing better than sipping a drink outdoors.
For a relaxing coffee with a view, we recommend Drip Coffee, where you can soak in the beautiful scenery of Departure Bay.
For something a little stronger, Lighthouse Bistro and Carlos O’Brian’s are top choices for delicious drinks and great waterfront vibes.
Nanaimo has so much to offer in the spring; we can’t wait to make the most of it. Whether you’re hiking, biking, golfing, or just enjoying a peaceful walk by the water, there’s something for everyone. What are your favourite spring activities? Let us know in the comments!
